Breaking records for Jaguar's 80th in Frankfurt!

A new Guinness World Record and a stunning stunt

A new Guinness World Record, and a stunning stunt to mark Jaguar's 80th anniversary and the launch of the production version of the F-Pace were highlights from the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, choreographed by global creative agency Imagination. Stunt driver Terry Grant fired the F-Pace at a 19.08-metre-high 'Loop' on an awesomely wet night, inflicting immense forces in excess of 6G on his body.

This project for Jaguar epitomised Imagination's philosophy that magic brings brands to life, underscoring the company's ability to conceive and produce in meticulous detail live theatrical events and experiences. The brief was to come up with something truly extraordinary to celebrate 80 years of the Jaguar brand, as well as launching its very first SUV. What better than to engineer and build the largest-ever 360 degree loop to showcase the F-PACE and break the Guinness World record for the largest "loop-the-loop" in a car ever, on the doorstep of the German competition on the eve of the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The top secret event was staged at a race course outside Frankfurt, with guests entering via a 45m tunnel, equipped with a large playback system to start building the atmosphere. Imagination's head of sound John Del'Nero focused on capturing the essence of Jaguar's heritage with the power, agility and presence of the new F-PACE, as it did apparently impossible loop-the-loop. He explains: "
"The Jaguar F-Pace is an extraordinary car and it needed an extraordinary event to launch it. One of the main elements to be employed was that of a surprise, so the whole thing had to be hidden from the press and public until the event itself, hence the tunnel leading to the pavilion where we held the presentation and the reveal of the loop."

The evening kicked off with a formal presentation, and the screening of a special video to mark the 80th birthday. A few minutes into the video, everything appeared to go horribly wrong the video stopped, and the guests waited to see what would happen next they were not disappointed.. A stunning kabuki drop revealed the giant loop barely 8 metres in front of them, and the world's media held its breath as Terry piloted the F-PACE round the loop - complete with choreographed sound set to timecode for the lighting and fireworks.

John Del'Nero explains his approach for the event:
"I designed 4 systems, with originally composed pieces of music that were briefed by the digital producer and myself to allow us to balance all the main musical elements on site. The first was the 45-metre
stereo tunnel system, which was designed to heighten media
anticipation on arrival. The second involved the presentation system, amplifying the presenters, with playback music elements from video and Qlab. My aim with the interior Kabuki reveal system was to refocus the audience from the main stage to the Kabuki drop and the Loop reveal, with the final element involving the exterior loop system itself. I designed the exterior system to help focus on the car over 300 metres to the left of the loop, with the sound traveling with the car from the start position up around the loop ending to the far right."

For Orbital Sound's conference and events team, led by Eric Simpson, this event was certainly not run of the mill - in keeping with the team's experience of world-class events working with Imagination! The sound systems included d&b audiotechnik J-Series and Q-Series cabinets, with J-SUBS and J-INFRA subs, mixed from Yamaha CL5s. Orbital Sound was also responsible for the critical site and in-car communications, using a Clear-Com FreeSpeak system to keep the stunt co-ordinator and Terry in close contact throughout and carefully monitoring the effect of the massive G-force as he hit the top.

For Imagination, this qualified as one of the most successful projects in its history. The reach was impressive for example, there were over 1.1 million views on social media of the footage within 24 hours alone. Awesome!
