Battersea Arts Centre chooses Nemesis

Getting BAC under control

One of the UK's most influential theatre complexes, London's multi-space Battersea Arts Centre (BAC), suffered a fire during March 2015 that severely damaged its Grand Hall, the venue's largest performance space, resulting in a re-think of the centre's various rooms.

Orbital Sound stepped in quickly to help with the supply of ex-rental sound equipment to replace some of the damaged kit, with the venue subsequently requiring a dual-redundancy audio playback and control system.

BAC's Technical Manager, Matt O'Leary, specified a Nemesis-based rack system, with Orbital Sound supplying two Apple Mac Mini computers running QLab software, controlled via a Nemesis CCS-2 Computer Controlled Switch, together with a Nemesis AD16SW 16-Channel ADAT switchover unit.

The system includes a Nemesis 8-Button Remote, with all the Nemesis devices control linked and triggered via the remote. Two RME Fireface 802 interfaces complete the system, which was supplied ready-to-go in an 8U flight-cased rack for deployment where required around the venue, with the dual-redundant design providing peace of mind in the event of a computer failure.

Following the fire, which damaged a considerable amount of audio gear, including a quantity of d&b audiotechnik T-10 loudspeakers that Orbital had supplied some two years previously, Orbital was able to source a d&b E-Series system from its ex-rental inventory. The replacement system comprises four d&b audiotechnik E12 loudspeakers, plus four E8 units, with sub duties being fulfilled by two E15X SUBs and two E12 SUBs. BAC's E-Series system is powered by two d&b audiotechnik D12 amplifiers.

Battersea Arts Centre's architecturally renowned 19th century listed building houses a vast array of some 80 separate performance spaces, including the Council Chamber, with its 170-seat capacity. The venue is currently undergoing a Capital Project redevelopment and refurbishment programme, which is scheduled for completion in spring 2016.
