Orbital collaborate with The Mousetrap Foundation and present TechTaster Training for Teachers.

Theatre sound specialist Orbital has broadened its annual training programme with the first successful edition of TechTaster. Staged at the company's central London based HQ using its expansive new seminar studio facility, TechTaster was presented in association with theatre education charity The Mousetrap Foundation (TMF).

TechTaster features as part of TMF's new initiative to help teachers learn the rudiments of theatre design and technology using the resources and skills of theatre professionals working in London's West End.

Developed in response to the concerns of Drama & Theatre Studies teachers who lack the skills sets to teach the Performance Support module in the GCSE National Curriculum, TechTaster is designed to empower teachers and thereby inspire pupils with a genuine interest in technical theatre studies.

The intensive one-day programme was attended by seven London based secondary school teachers and hosted by sound designer Gareth Fry and Orbital?s Seb Frost and Gareth Owen. Focussing on the vast potential of audio as a creative tool in contemporary theatre, specific hands-on sessions offered valuable insight into theatre sound; its design process, operation and advanced technology.

Gareth Fry commented:

"Over the last 20 years sound technology has advanced significantly and the creative possibilities of sound are now quite vast compared to the common perception of theatre sound as offstage doorbells and dog barks. The TechTaster programme allowed teachers to realise how sound could become like another performer on stage and how it could be an active contributor in the storytelling process. The teachers came away from the session inspired with new ideas about how sound could be used and how equipment can be utilised to realise their ideas."

The Mousetrap Foundation?s Education Manager, Linda Turner, added:
"It was a pleasure to work with the Orbital team. Their experience in the West End and knowledge of audio offered us the ideal partner for our first TechTaster session. We're looking forward to working with the team again to build on the programme's success."

TechTaster perfectly complements Orbital's annual schedule of educational initiatives, which include its course for advanced drama students co-hosted by The National Theatre and its Introduction to Acoustics co-presented by d&b audiotechnik. They underline the company's commitment to training at all levels with the ultimate goal of transferring knowledge to the future generation
