CSC Show Control Hits Las Vegas

Hans Klok - The Beauty of Magic - Planet Hollywood Resort, Theatre for Performing Arts

In June 2007 the new show from Dutch magician Hans Klok opened in the Theatre for Performing Arts of the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. In the Beauty of Magic Hans is joined by guest star Pamela Anderson and his Divas of Magic.

The Theatre for Performing Arts is a 7,000 seat venue; one of the biggest proscenium theatres in Northern America. For the "Beauty of Magic" we reduced the capacity to approximately 2,500. By making the venue smaller the sometimes small moments in the show don't get lost in the big space. Alongside with the house system we installed a full coverage surround system. All controlled from a Digidesign Venue mixing system with Dolby Lake System Controllers.

Our main playback system consists of two redundant Protools HD rigs. These play our "timeline" from the show hosting, sometimes 8-track, playbacks from recordings made with a 70-piece orchestra in London.

Alongside this timeline there are also 70 samples to be fired manually; all on visual cue by movement of Hans or someone else on stage. The samples are played back from CSC Show Control software supplied via Orbital Sound in London. We used two redundant CSC systems switched by a switching box made by Masque Sound.

Using CSC gave us the opportunity to use multi channel sampling within an easy to program software package. Our great help was the multi-sync option for the wav-players, giving us the ability to play with multi-channel surround samples, all played in sync. Importing the samples was as easy as it can be; and by using the note-on recall we were able to fire everything from the Venue.

Another feature of CSC that I sure want to try in the future is to use the hot-cue fire button pages in combination with a touch screen. I think that this feature gives designers and operators the ability to "hands-on" try things during rehearsal periods and grow with the performance as it evolves without having to wait or delay for programming etc. For "Beauty of Magic" we used CSC hot-cue triggers via keyboard recall...

We used CSC more as a sample playback system than as a show control system. Protools was our main timecode provider which triggered the mixing console. Knowing how easy it is to program CSC it could easily become the show controller for our next show!
