Zaxcom and ZedAlpha win ABTT Best New Audio Product 2007!

An amazing win - for the 5th year running!

Theatre sound specialist Orbital is delighted to announce that it has scooped its fifth successive award at the celebrated ABTT annual awards. Recognised as the voice of the technical theatre industry, the award for Best Sound Product was presented by ABTT Secretary Robin Townley to Orbital's Theo Holloway for innovative Zaxcom digital radio mic system.

ABTT Secretary, Robin Townley, commented:

"The Zaxcom Digital Radio mic system available form Orbital Sound with its forward thinking application of digital technology was very impressive. Cost effective but using digital modulation to its full advantage the Zaxcom system provides high quality audio via a robust and resilient digital broadcast protocol, which also offers distinct advantages when having to fit multiple mic channels into the ever reducing frequency bands available".

Orbital also announced the launch of its unique ZedAlpha radio monitoring software, which has been designed to complement its range of Zaxcom digital radio microphones.

Designed by Orbital's Theo Holloway; ZedAlpha boasts an extremely friendly user interface. It runs on the Windows platform with a universal PCI interface and is a thoroughly modern solution for all complex theatre and broadcast radio monitoring applications.

ZedAlpha allows the remote monitoring of all the principle parameters of the Zaxcom TRX900 miniature transmitters and TRX800 hand-held transmitters. Parameters monitored include remaining battery life, RF levels and audio levels. Plus an expanded view of each channel streams the last minute of data for analysis and fault finding. The software can also be used to fully program the receiver functions including encryption levels enabling secure and confidential transmissions.

A very powerful software tool, ZedAlpha is able to simultaneously monitor an astonishing 128 receiver channels, mirroring the huge multi-channel potential of the Zaxcom system.

Theo Holloway commented:

"We set ourselves the challenge of developing software that picked up where traditionally non-friendly solutions left off. That's why ZedAlpha can resize its graphics to make best use of the available screen space whether you're using 8 or 60 or 128 channels of audio. The software is fully networkable allowing multiple simultaneous monitoring stations. Plus it incorporates a version of Orbital's bespoke popular show-saving Radio World instant messaging utility.

The success of Zaxcom's TRX 900 system in theatre environments is down its unique technology that can "cluster" a large number of microphones into one frequency block without interference or inter-modulation. The TRX900 uses conventional frequency range between 518 - 870 MHz but due to its use of 100% digital modulation is considerably less prone to intermodulation. 30-plus channels can be fitted into a single 30Mhz wide frequency range, meaning a theoretical 200 plus units can be used simultaneously in the UK.

This impacts greatly as a means to counter the impending legislative changes being imposed by Ofcom where entire blocks of available bandwidths may be sold off for use in the broader telecommunications, mobile phone and digital TV markets.

Xazcom & ZedAlpha are currently being deployed with huge success on a number of West End musical productions including , Cabaret, and Little Shop of Horrors. Plus it is also being used with great effect on the UK tour of Mel Brookes' The Producers and are both available now to purchase from Orbital Professional Audio Sales.
