Cinderella Revival Surrounds UK with New Tour

Orbital supplies state-of-the-art sound system for Matthew Bourne's revival, featuring an innovative surround sound design by Paul Groothuis.

The innovative sound system for the new UK and European tour of Prokofiev's Cinderella, staged by Matthew Bourne in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Blitz, was supplied by Orbital Sound. Paul Groothuis' sound design involves a complex surround system that uses the Sony Vegas film production system, in conjunction with G type software to control the sound effects. The principal speaker system comprises the Meyer Melodie line array, complemented by a large surround system of 60 x d&b audiotechnik E3 cabinets and Meyer 650P subs.

The ballet's storyline centres around the brief wartime romance between Cinderella and a young RAF pilot, and is performed in surround sound with a specially commissioned new recording of the score. Orbital used its unique RacPac modular racking system to configure the equipment and streamline the touring process for maximum load-in speed and efficiency.
One of the principal fit-up challenges involved synching the various time code and MIDI elements between the Sony Vegas and G-Type software. Paul is using the Sony Vegas with three computers for the surround sound playback, complemented by the G-Type software to control the S6000 samplers for the SFX. This is triggered by timecode off the Vegas computers, which in turn sends MIDI back to the Vegas to set the next cue points in the music.

The tour kicked off in late 2010 in Plymouth, before moving to Sadlers' Wells Theatre in London for an extended run over the Christmas season. The production is scheduled to tour around the country during the first half of 2011, before moving on to Europe.
