Art Of Noise

Orbital sponsors sound artist Kate Tierney for Year of the Artist as part of the Millennium Festival.

Orbital Sound has underlined its commitment not only to the performance arts, but also to the value of sound as an art form by sponsoring the celebrated sound artist Kate Tierney, the creator of the launch piece for Year of the Artist.

As part of the Millennium Festival, Year of the Artist is supported and funded by the NMEC, Coca-Cola, as well as by the Arts Council and the 10 regional Arts Boards. Its aim is to raise the profile of living artist across each region of the UK by promoting site-specific works in at least 1,000 unusual and unpredictable places.

To mark the launch of the Year of the Artist at the Lux, Hoxton, North London, Kate Tierney's sonic installation formed the centerpiece of the night's art celebrations. Rather than featuring sound as an adjunct to performance, Tierney's approach is to make it central.

She has also collaborated with the University of Essex to develop specific software for her project 'Statics'. allowing for audio manipulation of images through audience presence and audience interaction. Her fascination in the relationship between sound, movement and image - how the three are interrelated and how sound in particular can be used to effect or produce a change in image - has led to the creation of the installation that represented Year of the Artist on its launch night.

By placing her work in everyday environments, in this case, "a concept of Chinese Whispers". Tierney used the image of reporter John Humphrys to describe news reportage about sound which later became transcribed by the sound of the actual party effect, live in the room. Tierney communicates a powerful message about how we absorb different levels of sound information through an awareness on different levels.

Orbital Sound worked closely with Tierney to enable her to realise the potential of the launch piece. As she explained: "Orbital's support not only gave me unlimited studio time in their new in-house editing suites, which was invaluable, but also their vast range of high specification product allowed me to experiment with new technology and develop the project to the maximum effect. Orbital's technical department were fantastic in tailoring the system for my purpose and overcome many logistical complexities, on site. I'm really loking forward to working with Orbital on future projects throughout Year of the Artist and beyond."

As Orbital MD Chris Headlam commented: "We are proud to have helped Kate on this project and to support performance art at a community level."
