Orbital's sound of makeup for Saint Lauren

Creating an elegant system with d&b audiotechnik, Yamaha and Sennheiser

International fashion house Saint Lauren held a 3-day makeup artist convention recently, at the prestigious IL Bottaccio venue in London's Grosvenor Place. UK company Timebased provided the event planning and management, with Orbital handling the sound. The team deployed d&b audiotechnik loudspeakers, a Yamaha LS9-16 console, and Sennheiser RF links between the event's main room and two small satellite rooms, creating a low profile and elegant sound system for the event.

The convention's format involved presentations to in-store makeup artists from national and international delegates. Makeup desks were brought in for the final day, with invited journalists taking the part of make-up models.

Orbital's team for the Il Bottaccio event included Eric Simpson, Event & Comms Director, and David Bartholomeusz, Project Manager, with David commenting:
"Fashion-related projects form a significant part of our hectic corporate-events schedule. For this event, our main on-site challenge was having just a two-hour set-up window, in which to load everything in and create the low-profile, elegant sound design that the client required, in keeping with the project's slick production style. Two d&b E12s and E15 SUBs were deployed in the main room, hidden towards the corners, with ten d&b E0s used throughout the three spaces, to deliver the presentation sound and background music. We used local power in the three rooms, and the RF links enabled audio to be fed throughout the event without having to lay cable runs. To maintain the discreet approach, the Yamaha LS9-16 was controlled via the StageMix app running on an iPad, so Eric could control the levels remotely, from anywhere around the venue. The event's success from our point of view was to achieve a blend of style and discretion, with clarity and technical functionality."
