Designing Liza (on an E)

for one week only!

Among Orbital's latest design projects was Australian performer Trevor Ashley's one-man drag show, Liza (on an E), which ran at the Vaudeville Theatre in May staged by Speckulation Entertainment. The highly entertaining cabaret act charts Liza Minnelli's extraordinary life in a whole new way, with seasoned artist Trevor Ashley delivering a knock-out performance accompanied by a 7-piece band.

The production schedule was extremely tight, with just two days to get everything in and working before the first preview. Orbital's David Bartholomeusz designed the sound, using d&b audiotechnik E12 and E18 subs as the main front of house system, mixed on a Yamaha M7CL console. For the band monitoring, David deployed d&b E9s for side fill, with EV S40s to provide localised feeds. The radios were Sennheiser SKM5200 handhelds with Neumann condenser heads and EM3732 receivers, and the amplifiers were a combination of d&b D6/D12/P1200 and Lab Gruppen units.

David commented:
"It was a pleasure to work alongside Neil Eckersley from Speckulation Entertainment on this exciting production of Liza (on an E). Although the schedule was very tight, it was well rehearsed and the leading actor,Trevor Ashley, is a real "down-under" pro! His band was also very professional and coped with the speedy production process and last minute sound design alterations. Sound designing cabaret acts is always a pleasure to do and this one was nothing short of that."

Orbital's project leader for the show was Keith Hutchinson, supported by Lucy Jenkins as production sound engineer and David Sorrell as principal build engineer.
