2013 Mixing Musicals course completes second successful year

Orbital's two-day Mixing Musicals training course concluded yesterday and was voted a hit by all 16 students!

Held at our purpose-built training rooms, programming suite & sound studio in Brixton, London the course focused on the practical skills and theory behind best-practice FOH mixing requirements for modern musicals.

The students experienced all the essential tasks associated with sound operating excellence, from basic mixing theory to working with the latest digital mixing technology.

Mixing Musicals is far, far more than just another "this is how a mixing desk works" workshop - Mixing Musicals participant's were taken through every stage of the process – from the rehearsal room to setting up a desk in its base state, including the theory, introduction to why line-by-line mixing is so important, and what happens when you don't do it.

Hand-on experience is an essential aspect of the course, which included a trip to the West End for a behind-the-scenes look at a Top Hat The Musical and chance to talk in depth to the show's sound team.

Orbital's Alex Waddle was responsible for putting the course together, explaining:
"The students spent the Tuesday morning covering theory and seeing videos of Mike Thacker mixing Top Hat. Then, in the afternoon we took the students to Top Hat in the West End where they met Mike and saw the system there. Wednesday was hands-on time on the desks - Marcus Wadland and Richard Carter were joined by the highly experienced operator, Jane Bloomfield."
