Leader Of The Pack

A 60s rock and roll musical.

Leader of the Pack, a new rock-and-roll musical set in the 60s and based on the songwriting partnership of Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Phil Spector, has begun a provincial theatre tour in the UK. The audio setup for the show was concieved by sound designer Bobby Aitken and contracted out to Orbital, which supplied all the equipment to order. When Aitken specified 10 Martin Audio WT3s as his preferred sound-reinforcement enclosure, those and four matching WS2A Martin subs were purchased by Orbital for the production.

Orbital also developed the rack equipment into a touring package compatible with short load-in times. All amps, processors, radio mic receivers, mains and audio patching fit into two double-bay wheeled road cases, according to Orbital managing director Chris Headlam, who added that the WT3s are normally mounted in horizontal pairs, using Martin Audio/Thomas Engineering low-profile flying brackets. The system is powered by amplification from Lab Gruppen, which recently joined Martin Audio in the TGI Group company portfolio.

In other Orbital Sound news, the company worked closely with sound designer Scott Myers on the RSC production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (LWW) and supplied a digital sound system to Sadlers Wells for the show's Christmas run. Orbital supplied the production with a Yamaha PM1D console, which Myers "pushed to the limits" and accommodated 28 cast members and a 14-piece orchestra by way of 108 sources, using all 96 inputs available on this desk. Myers was able to maximise the creative use of the complex sound effects, which were partly created in Orbital's Brixton based editing studio, to enhance the production's magical qualities through dramatic effect.

The desk was used with a complex configuration of d&b loudspeakers, a mix of C7s, C7 Subs, E18s, B2s, E3s, C6s and C690s...
