Orbital In Paradise

Orbital Sound recently supplied Opera North with a sound reinforcement system for Paradise Moscow, a new version of Shostakovich's Cheryomuski.

Orbital worked closely with sound designer Roland Highman and Opera North during pre-production to configure a system which would "enhance the overall effect by equalising the variety of vocal styles and the projection of dialogue over the orchestration without compromising the general style of the piece."

Roland Highman comments, "We had to create a very subtle and transparent reinforcement without making the show sound simplified. At the same time we had to ensure everyword, spoken or sung could be clearly heard over a considerable pit orchestra."

Central to the system is the Midas Heritage 1000 FOH mixing console. Adds Highman, "The Heritage gives us the transparent audio quality we need with a comprehensive automation system in a compact frame size. In addition, as Paradise Moscow tours with two other shows (as a rep season) which do not require reinforcement, we had to find a solution with a very small footprint having to strike the FOH control after every show."
