ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S TELL ME ON A SUNDAY WITH DENISE VAN OUTEN

A resounding message has been sent out to the industry by Orbital Sound after purchasing their fifth Yamaha digital PM1D mixing console from dealers, Marquee Audio.

Their MD, Chris Headlam, believes that Yamaha?s digital platform should no longer be regarded as revolutionary ? and backs up his claim by stating that three of the other Orbital boards have been specified onto three other leading West End musicals serviced by the company ? Bombay Dreams, Our House and Joseph And the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
?Large format digital desk are now an established principal,? he contends. ?In the three years since we started using them they have become the de facto standard ? a top West End theatre tool ? and Marquee Audio helped us make it happen. It?s bread and butter stuff to us now, and no longer feels like we?re sticking our necks out.?
Having previously specified a PM1D, running v1.5 software on Bombay Dreams and subsequently on Saturday Night Fever, sound designer, Mick Potter, had little hesitation in placing it on the revival of Tell Me On A Sunday, starring Denise Van Outen at London?s Gielgud Theatre, where board operator, Tim Clark, will be running the new v1.6 software.
The new features of v1.6 that have benefited the show include ?Auto Naming? ? the ability to name the ?port? on Input Units, and having decided on which channels these inputs are to appear, automatically have the names transferred onto the corresponding channels; ?Selective Recall? ? the ability to specify the parameters of any channel the operator wishes to recall in any scene, allowing the operator only to make changes to the designated channels; ?Scene Link Event? ? allowing the operator to write MIDI code directly onto a scene; ?Multi Band Processor? ? a frequency-specific compressor, ideal for problem solving, and ?Console Lock? ? arguably the most beneficial of the features. Exposed to theatre-goers brushing past, the PM1D can now be password locked ? so it doesn?t matter if faders or rotary encoders get knocked.

Marquee Audio have backed Orbital every step of the way with service issues during both companies? initial learning curve ? but he now feels the technology has matured.
At the Gielgud they will have a CS1D Control Surface running two DSP1D processing engines in mirror mode for the one-woman show. Denise Van Outen will be wearing two Sennheiser 5012 radio mic transmitters, and will be backed by a five-piece band. For this they are using 48 analogue inputs and 64 outs, and the system is remotely controlled from a Fujitsu radio tablet system, allowing the console settings to be adjusted from anywhere in the auditorium.
Produced by The Really Useful Group and Bill Kenwright, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black, the original Act 1 production of Lloyd Webber?s Song & Dance launched the career of Marti Webb 14 years ago. The new show is scheduled for an initial 20-week run.
Summarised Chris Headlam, ?We are delighted to be awarded the sound production on this musical, which continues our long relationship with The Really Useful Group and Bill Kenwright.?
