Educating the Educators

Hundreds of students pass through our doors

Orbital's commitment and passion for education is something that runs through every facet of our company. For years, we have pioneered new courses that are specifically designed to provide the skills needed for a career in theatre sound or to broaden the knowledge of those already involved in different aspects of production.

Mixing for Musicals, Sound Fundamentals for Theatre, Micing the Actor and Sound for Stage Management are regulars on our calendar and we have seen literally hundreds of students pass through our doors.

In May, we welcomed students from two professional educational establishments - adding a new dimension to the mix as we embarked on specially developed courses for Rose Bruford College, London and Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Our training supremo Mike Thacker explains: "Belmont University were put in touch with us via Yamaha Nexo, during a European-wide visit involving four different study groups. The tutors wanted to set up a 2-day audio engineering course, involving 16 mature students. We developed a bespoke course based on our successful Mixing for Musicals and Sound Fundamentals for Theatre - it went really well, getting excellent feedback from students and the tutors alike, particularly regarding the hands-on approach of these courses and focus on developing real-world practical skills."

Mike has a close connection with Rose Bruford College, and when Adam Legah, Subject Leader Stage & Events Management, was looking for an intensive course in sound technology for stage management students, he rose to the challenge with a new, bespoke format. Involving a total of 25 students, the course was staged twice on consecutive days, focusing on providing stage management with an essential induction into sound. Again, the students came away with hands-on experience and a much deeper understanding, building their confidence as part of their wider training.

At Orbital, our training covers every aspect of live theatre sound across a range of options that can be customised to fit every and any criteria - whether for students, industry professionals wanting to brush up their skills, amateurs or educational establishments. Improving standards in our industry is what we are committed to doing.
